Motukea
Overview
PNG Ports Corporation relocated its primary port operations from the center of Port Moresby to a new, modern facility at Motukea Island. The project involved constructing a new international port designed to handle large Panamax-sized container vessels. This new port included a 330-meter-long berth, a large reclamation area, and a 700-meter-long connecting causeway.
Kramer Asia Pacific was engaged in a multi-phase role for this critical maritime project. We first developed the initial concept designs, technical specifications, and tender documentation. Following this, we were retained by the client to act as the owner’s engineer and also represented the financing agency.

Problem
The main port in the center of Port Moresby was no longer suitable for PNG’s growing international trade and shipping needs. A complete relocation to Motukea Island was required to decongest the city and build a modern, purpose-built international wharf. This complex project needed expert maritime engineering to create a feasible design and diligent oversight to ensure the contractor’s work met all technical and financial standards.

Solution
Kramer APAC provided the initial technical foundation for the project by developing the concept designs and ‘design and construct’ tender documents. Our team was then retained to act as the owner’s engineer, where we reviewed the contractor’s detailed designs for compliance. We also conducted intermittent site inspections during construction and acted for the financing agency by certifying the contractor’s progress claims against the actual work completed.
